NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister
Arvind Kejriwal's principal secretary
Rajendra Kumar on Tuesday got bail from a trial court in a corruption case. Special judge Arvind Kumar granted bail to Rajendra on a personal bond and surety of Rs 1 lakh each.
Though the court granted relief to Kumar, it imposed certain conditions on him, including that of not leaving Delhi without court's permission. It also directed Kumar to not contact any witness or "tamper with evidence" in any manner.
Kumar, who was arrested on July 4 along with some others, had sought bail saying no purpose would be served by keeping him behind bars as all recoveries in the case have been made. He had also told the court that his daughter was "seriously ill" and he was required at home to take care of his daughter.
On the other hand,
CBI had strongly opposed Kumar's bail and had said that Kumar "may tamper with evidence" if released on bail. Objecting to Kumar's plea, CBI had also suggested that despite being behind bars, Kumar may be threatening witnesses.
"We have evidence that even till today, they (accused) are threatening the witnesses,"CBI had said, adding that Kumar's presence outside will create an intimidating atmosphere for the witnesses. CBI had also said
that the investigation is at a "crucial" stage and the money trail is being probed.
CBI had made seven arrests in the case. All accused persons are lodged in Tihar jail under judicial custody. Apart from Rajendra, CBI had also arrested owners of a private firm Endeavour Systems Pvt Ltd (ESPL), Sandeep Kumar and Dinesh Kumar Gupta and Kaushik's predecessor GK Nanda, former Managing Director of Intelligent Communication Systems India Ltd (ICSIL), a Delhi government undertaking.
CBI has alleged that that the accused persons showed undue favours to private firm ESPL, which the agency alleged was floated by Kumar for the award of government contracts worth over Rs 50 crore. CBI had registered a case against Kumar and others in December last year alleging that the officer had abused his official position by “favouring a particular firm in the last few years in getting tenders of Delhi government departments."
